A UK hallmark is an independent mark that verifies the precious-metal fineness of an item. It can include a sponsor's or maker's mark, a fineness mark and the mark of the assay office that tested it.
Items described and sold as precious metal generally require a recognised hallmark when they are above the legal exemption weight: 1 gram for gold, 7.78 grams for silver, 0.5 gram for platinum and 1 gram for palladium. Items below those weights can be legally exempt.
Our gold vermeil has a sterling-silver base with gold plating 2.5 microns thick. Where a vermeil item is hallmarked, the hallmark relates to the silver base. The product page will state the plating finish separately.
We state the base metal and fineness where applicable on each product page. Precious-metal products are hallmarked in accordance with the applicable UK legal weight thresholds.
